I find it not very reassuring when I ask a fella how he is doing and he responds, "Not too much." This happens fairly often. Do people not really care about listening to folks, or do they just not care about me specifically? I find the latter hard to believe since I am so glib and engaging all the time!

I think that the answer "not too much" can sometimes be a way to be considerate. Think abuot it. You probably say, "How are you doing?" to people with whom you don't really want to engage in conversation. Do you honestly want to stop and listen to someone you find annoying ramble about their day? You probably ask people that question pretty often. It is just nice to answer the question, and the "not too much" is a nice answer. I don't think I made much sense with this comment.

Do you mean you would rather have them say, Fine, or Great? Maybe they think you are saying, WHAT are you doing?, and their answer makes sense.
Of course you are always glib and engaging, Sweetie!
